Sperm Washing At Home

Sperm washing is a process used to separate healthy, motile sperm from seminal fluid prior to insemination. It is a necessary step for intrauterine insemination (IUI), as unwashed semen should not be placed directly into the uterus.

This service is designed for people pursuing home IUI who want sperm preparation performed safely outside of a clinical or laboratory setting.

Why does sperm need to be washed?

Seminal fluid contains prostaglandins and other components that can cause uterine cramping or irritation if introduced directly into the uterus. Sperm washing removes seminal plasma and concentrates motile sperm, making it safe for use in IUI and increasing chances of success.

Unwashed semen may be used for intracervical insemination (ICI), but IUI always requires washed sperm.

How is sperm washing done at home?

Sperm washing can be performed in a home setting using sterile supplies and established preparation techniques. The process involves suspending the semen in mediums that are configured for sperm survival, creating a density gradient with centrifugation. The supplies are transportable and can easily be setup on a table or countertop in your home.

The steps generally include:

  • Allowing a fresh semen sample to liquefy for around 20 minutes before beginning the wash

  • Separating motile sperm from seminal fluid using a centrifuge, which takes around 45 minutes

  • Preparing the final sperm sample for immediate use in an IUI procedure

All preparation is done with attention to cleanliness, timing, and sperm viability. You are welcome to observe and ask questions throughout the process.

What method is used for sperm washing?

Bay Fertility Care uses a density gradient sperm wash method.

A density gradient separates sperm based on density and motility, allowing healthy, motile sperm to be isolated from seminal fluid, debris, and less viable sperm. This method is commonly used in clinical fertility settings and can be safely performed in a home environment with appropriate equipment.

Compared to simpler preparation methods, such as a basic wash or swim-up, a density gradient provides more thorough separation and more consistent preparation for intrauterine insemination (IUI).

How long does sperm washing take?

The sperm washing process typically takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the sample and method used. This timing is carefully coordinated with ovulation and insemination to ensure sperm are used promptly and effectively.

When sperm washing is part of a home IUI visit, the preparation and insemination are planned together as one coordinated process.

What else needs to be considered?

Fresh vs. frozen sperm
Sperm washing at home is most commonly used with fresh sperm from a known donor or partner. Frozen sperm from a sperm bank is typically washed prior to freezing, though some vials are sold unwashed and would still need to be washed immediately prior to IUI.
